What is gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is an examination of the upper part of the small intestine, stomach and esophagus using a so-called endoscope, a flexible instrument with a camera.
Preparation
You must fast for 6 hours before the examination – no food or drink.

Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will be charged according to the Region's rules at 400 SEK.

Blood thinning medications
If you are being treated with blood thinning medication, it is important to read the information below carefully.
If tissue samples need to be taken during the examination, the risk of bleeding is increased if this medication cannot be discontinued before the examination. The number of days you must be without the medication varies depending on the drug.
Please contact the doctor responsible for prescribing blood thinners as soon as possible and consult about this.
General recommendations
- Clopidogrel (Plavix) – discontinued 5 days before examination day and can be restarted the day after the procedure
- Dabigatran (Pradaxa) and apixaban (Eliquis) – discontinued 3 days before examination and can be restarted 3 days after the procedure
- Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) – discontinued 2 days before examination and can be restarted 2 days after the procedure
- Prasugrel (Efient) – discontinued 7 days before examination
- Ticagrelor (Brilique) – discontinued 7 days before examination and restarted 2 days after the procedure
- Apixaban (Lixiana) – discontinued 2 days before the procedure/examination
- NOTE: If you take a blood thinning medication other than Trombyl, please call us as soon as possible.
Important information
Sometimes sedative medication may be needed during the examination. Therefore, do not drive here unless you have a driver, as you will not be allowed to drive for the rest of the day.
During the examination, tissue samples are sometimes taken for microscopic analysis. They are stored in a Biobank for possible future needs. If you do not want the samples to be stored, please inform us during the examination.
